Current, emeriti faculty, student play role in International Congress on Glass conference

Alfred University’s glass engineering science program was well represented at the 2025 International Congress of Glass conference, held Jan. 20-24 in Kolkata, India. Current and emeriti faculty, a Ph.D. student, and an alumna were present for the conference.


Arun Varshneya, emeritus professor of glass science, was co-organizer for the conference. He gave a plenary talk and provided opening and closing remarks. Varshneya is president and CEO of Saxon Glass Technologies. Alastair Cormack, emeritus professor, presented a keynote talk. Doris Möncke, associate professor of glass science, served as co-chair of a symposium, “Glass Science: Physics and Chemistry,” and also presented a keynote talk.

Annika Blake-Howland, a Ph.D. student in glass engineering science at Alfred University, presented on her work as a Glass Art Conservator. Blake-Howland served as coordinator of the Paul Vickers Gardner Glass Center on the Alfred University.

Alfred University alumna Kathleen Richardson, ’82, MS ’88, PhD ’92, received the International Congress on Glass (ICG) President’s Award at the conference. The award recognizes outstanding lifetime contributions to the international glass community in areas such as scientific discoveries, engineering developments, artistic accomplishments leadership and communications.

Richardson, who earned bachelor’s and doctoral degrees in ceramic engineering and a master’s degree in glass science from Alfred University, is Pegasus Professor of Optics and Materials Science in CREOL, the College of Optics and Photonics at the University of Central Florida (UCF) and is a member of Alfred University’s Board of Trustees.
