A Legacy of Innovation and Excellence

Founded in 1900, the NYSCC has played a pioneering role in many of its fields of study. Established as a unique public-private partnership, the college has fostered an environment where scientific research and artistic exploration thrive side by side. Over the decades, NYSCC has attracted world-renowned faculty and produced alumni who have become leaders in their fields, shaping industries and pushing the boundaries of innovation.

Founding documents describe the relationship between Alfred University and the New York State College of Ceramics: “No branch of study can stand alone. The student of clay working should be educated in collateral departments of science and arts. For this work Alfred University offers splendid advantages. Laboratories of chemistry and physics, workshops for manual training, and all the departments of liberal culture are available, so that the many and varied requirements of a complete education are fully met.”

In 2025, the partnership retains the original intent as highlighted by the deep intersections between academic programs and collaborative relationships across campus. The School of Art & Design, the Inamori School of Engineering, and the Scholes Library, all integral parts of the NYSCC, continue to uphold this tradition by offering cutting-edge programs and fostering interdisciplinary collaboration. From groundbreaking ceramic, glass, and video art to advancements in materials science used in aerospace, medicine, and electronics, the NYSCC remains a global leader in its disciplines.
